Windows XP SP2 comes with built in firewall for providing some sort of security by default.But it is not a powerfull firewall that can stop inbound connections to your pc so you always need a dedicated hardware firewall or software like zone alarm.

Firewall is a either a hardware based solution or a program, that is meant to limit access to your computer from the network, and on the otherhand from your computer to the network. There are plenty of different firewalls, but the ZoneAlarm firewall described here is simple, reliable and free.
